Chapter 14 - Timothy

Timothy watched as Priya and Sarah raced toward the gates, their petite forms hunched low over their bikes. Their tires kicked up clods of dirt, smoke belching from the exhaust pipes. Weaving through the crowd, they reached the exit within seconds, pausing briefly to speak to John before continuing.

Priya was in the lead. She was a beautiful and accomplished woman, but he had eyes only for Sarah. Her reddish hair flashed in the sun, forming a halo around her head. When he closed his eyes, he could see her bright blue eyes crinkling at the corners when she laughed, and that was often. She lifted his spirits whenever she was around, her sparkling personality a magic potion against the horrors of the world.

His stomach churned with worry, her safety paramount in his mind. He couldn’t believe he’d let her leave without him, not that she’d given him a choice. Still, it felt wrong to let her run into the jaws of danger alone, no matter how tough she was. He felt like a coward, and not for the first time either. He’d been threatening to tell her how he felt for months and failed.

Anxiety coursed through Timothy’s veins as he watched his beloved leave the farm. A final glimpse was all he got as she sped into the distance, heading straight for the horde. Or was she going to her doom?

The thought was too much to bear, and Timothy spun away from the sight. He busied himself by hustling people toward the exit. At this point, everyone knew the zombies were close, and they huddled inside their vehicles, eager to leave. No dogs or kids ran around, and no one bickered over who went next. A single line of cars moved toward the exit, and it seemed as if they might make it after all. But what about Sarah?

Without thinking about it, he ran toward the gate. He found his father, John, still directing the flow of traffic. A pair of binoculars hung from his neck, and Timothy pointed at them. “Can I borrow those, please?”

“Of course, but hurry. There’s no time to waste,” John said, handing them over.

“I’ll be quick.” Timothy took the binoculars and jogged through the exit, stopping once he reached the middle of the road.

The horde was much closer than before, the dust cloud looming large on the horizon. But by all rights, it should have reached the farm already, which meant George and David had succeeded. They’d delayed the horde. The question was, would it be enough?

Raising the binoculars to his eyes, Timothy scanned the base of the dust cloud. It didn’t take him long to notice that the bulk of the horde was moving away from the farm. The undead surged across the road toward the far end, following something he couldn’t see. George and David, perhaps? It was impossible to tell.

However, a big chunk of the horde was still headed their way, and he noticed with alarm that Sarah and Priya were trying to head it off.
